Zululand NPO addresses bullying at school

The NPO believes it is vital to teach children about the dangers of bullying while they are in primary school.

Kwambonambi-based NPO Inhlansiyethemba Community Development has initiated a campaign to address bullying in schools.

The NPO believes it is vital to teach children about the dangers of bullying while they are in primary school.

‘Bullying is a syndrome that affects children even in primary school. If it is not addressed, we might end up living in a dangerous society.

‘Some pupils and students end up committing suicide because they can’t stand the pain and humiliation they go through,’ said NPO founder Bheki Zikhali.

Last week, Zikhali took his campaign to Luhlanga Primary School in KwaMthethwa under uMfolozi Municipality.

He said their research revealed that some children are bullying others in ignorance, unaware of the outcome or repercussions.

‘Some of these children come from abusive families, they have anger fueling them, and the only way to deal with that anger is through abuse.

‘This is why we came up with the idea of educating young children about the dangers of this kind of behaviour.

‘Reading for meaning is one of the tools we use. We believe kids need to be taught how to read, and at the same time encourage them to respect and love each other,’ he said.

The NPO also donated food parcels and stationery to needy children, donated by Vodacom.

NPO members were accompanied by Vodacom representative Musa Mbuli, social workers from the Ukuthandukuhila NPO, Dima Langa, Linzwa Foundation founder Lindiwe Dube, and a representative from uMfolozi Municipality.

Dube told the children about the importance of good behaviour and self-identity.
