eSikhaleni NPO assists people with albinism

CHILDREN living with albinism face particular challenges, one of which is the danger of sun exposure in the summer months.

To support and protect these children, eSikhaleni-based NPO S’lethukukhanya Foundation launched the Save a Child with Albinism campaign on Friday at Imizikayifani Primary School.

At the event, the NPO handed over sunscreen, wide-brimmed hats and UV-400 protection sunglasses to 20 children living with albinism.

The S’lethukukhanya Foundation was joined by SA Harvest which donated food parcels to the families.

Chairperson of the foundation, Sibonelo Mgwaza used the launch to educate the community on the dangers of stigmatising people living with albinism.

‘We are truly grateful to our partners the Old Mutual Foundation, for supporting this campaign that assists the vulnerable community members with albinism,’ said Magwaza.

‘People with albinism have light-sensitive skin and, because of poor backgrounds, some are exposed to the hot sun without protection. Sunburn is the most serious complication as it increases the risk of developing skin cancer and sunburn damage-related thickening of the skin.’
