IFP and ANC in surprise co-operation agreement

Negotiations are still under way over the fate of the four economic hubs of KZN

IN a surprise announcement from the IFP this afternoon (Wednesday) the party president announced co-operation with the ANC to rule hung municipalities across KZN.

IFP president Velenkosini Hlabisa said the party came to a ‘broad understanding’ with the ANC that where the IFP has the most seats, despite no outright majority, the IFP will form the municipal government, and vice versa.

In spite of this move that has angered many IFP voters across the province, Hlabisa said they are in politics ‘to serve the will and interests of the people’.

‘We believe in respecting the democratic will of South Africa’s voters. We also believe in prioritising stability in governance ahead of political power,’ Hlabisa said.

‘This is not a coalition. A coalition places both parties in power, with a sharing of positions.

‘What we are doing is allowing the party with the most votes to govern.’

Negotiations are still under way over the fate of the four economic hubs of KZN where the dynamics are more complex.
