SEARCH and rescue efforts are ongoing for a 16-year-old who is believed to have drowned at Hlobane beach in Mzingazi last Wednesday.

According to Richards Bay Saps communications officer Captain Debbie Ferreira, the police helicopter joined the intensive search operations on Friday.

It is believed the teenager was at the beach with two other boys when he was struck by a big wave and washed out to sea.

On Monday, Captain Ferreira said operations were still under way to find the body.

Initial reports indicated that spring tides and very strong northerly and southerly winds could have taken the body anywhere between St Lucia lighthouse and Durnford Point.
