Jozini maskandi artist Lindokuhle Gumede (24), was shot and killed at E Section in KwaMashu, Durban recently

JOZINI maskandi artist Lindokuhle Gumede (24), was shot and killed at E Section in KwaMashu, Durban, last Sunday.

Gumede, whose stage name is ‘Khalasi Inkosiyamathonga’, was killed on his way home after his last performance at the unveiling of another maskandi artist’s album at a men’s hostel.

It is believed he was followed by his killers after leaving the venue where maskandi musician Polo Makhoba’s album was launched.

Lindokuhle’s girlfriend, Nosipho Mthiyane, said one of his brothers broke the news to her.

‘At this stage I do not have much information, but I’m really traumatised. I’m expecting to give birth to his child at the end of this month,’ she said.

Mthiyane said her boyfriend went out to perform at various events every weekend.

The deceased’s cousin, Njabulo Gumede, said they were walking together when the shooting occurred.

‘The attackers approached us from behind, and without saying anything, they fired at him.

This clearly indicates a planned killing as they had been monitoring him,’ he said.

‘Three shots were fired and he was hit twice, in his upper body and left arm.

‘My cousin was the sole breadwinner of his family.

He was doing temporary work and making extra money through performances,’ he said.

KZN police spokesperson Colonel Thembeka Mbhele said a case of murder was registered at KwaMashu Saps, and a 23-year-old suspect arrested and charged with murder on Monday.

‘He appeared in the Ntuzuma Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday and was remanded in custody pending further investigation,’ said Mbhele.

‘He is expected to appear at the same court on Tuesday for a formal bail application.’
