A GARDENING project, launched in Mandlazini last week, aims to educate the community in agricultural practices while providing a fresh supply of nutritional vegetables.

The project, initiated by non-profit organisation, Mandlazini Mqedi Community Centre in partnership with Siyathuthuka Welfare Organisation, was launched alongside a human trafficking awareness programme.

This was supported by Richards Bay SAPS, the Department of Social Development and other community organisations and stakeholders.

Locals were encouraged to join the gardening project to supplement their food supply and partake in physical activity.

Educational awareness was also provided on the threat of human trafficking through violence, manipulation and false promises.

According to programme facilitator from Siyathuthuka, Sthembile Gazu, it is vital that community members take advantage of projects that improve their wellbeing.

‘Food security remains a concern, and a few months ago, locals experienced firsthand the inability to access supplies during the looting,’ said Gazu.

‘Having households involved in gardening projects ensures consistent food supply and sustainability. We want our youth to engage in subsistence farming and take advantage of opportunities in agriculture.’
