Voting day safety tips to keep you safe

ON 1 November voters countrywide will make their way to their nearest voting station to make their mark in the upcoming municipal elections.

The country’s more than 23 000 polling stations will be open between 8am and 9pm on voting day, while special votes will be cast on 30 and 31 October.

‘When making your way to vote on the day, remember these basic safety measures to ensure you exercise your right to vote in a safe and secure manner,’ said Charnel Hattingh, head of marketing and communications at Fidelity ADT.

Step one, she says, is to remember to lock up properly when you leave home.

‘Although most voting stations are located nearby, this does not mean you shouldn’t worry about making sure your doors and windows are closed and locked,’ said Hattingh.

She also recommends leaving any flashy jewellery and other expensive items at home.

Voters must remember to take their ID cards and other documents that the IEC requires, to cast their vote.

‘If driving to the polling station, don’t leave valuable items in your car, and make sure your car is securely locked before walking away.

‘Saps will have a presence at all voting stations, and you should ask for their help if there is anything or anyone making you feel uncomfortable or suspicious on the day.’
