‘Art in the park’ ready to roll

MEC Mavimbela to host festival in Dundee

KZN MEC for Arts, Culture, Sport and Recreation Hlengiwe Mavimbela will roll out the ‘Art in the Park’ programme at Sibongile township in Dundee tomorrow (Tuesday).

According to the department, with the country now on alert Level 1, the MEC is ramping up programmes to revive the sector and assist artists heavily affected by the pandemic.

This initiative is part of a comprehensive ward-based intervention programme which will involve various multi-cultural groups from uMzinyathi district.
The public can look forward to dance and music competitions, including different genres such as maskandi, ingoma, poetry, hip-hop, gospel, township dance, and fine arts and craft.
First-place winners for each genre will win R5 000, second place R3 000 and R2 000 for third place.
‘These competitions will be rolled out throughout the province, culminating in district competitions. A schedule of other local-based competitions will follow once the department concludes discussions with municipal arts stakeholders,’ said Mavimbela.
This cultural festival will benefit upcoming artists in and around uMzinyathi district, including food cuisine and art exhibitions.
The public can also look forward to performances by Big Zulu, Ntencane and Izingane Zoma.
