A CAMPAIGN to tackle the issue of teen pregnancy and drug abuse in Pongola has been organised by the Pongola Local Drugs Action Committee, with the mayor addressing Landokuhle High School pupils last Tuesday.
uPhongolo Mayor Sibusiso Mhlongo who heads the company, also called on eligible students to get the Covid-19 vaccination, and to avoid misleading information.

‘The fact that President Cyril Ramaphosa made it clear we still have to maintain social distancing, wear our masks and wash our hands regularly means the pandemic is still with us,’ he said.
‘We have seen President Ramaphosa and Premier Sihle Zikalala get their vaccinations, and they are still alive.’
Mhlongo said the committee is working with various stakeholders to tackle these socio-economic challenges.
‘We have noted with concern the increase of substance abuse in our community,’ he said.
‘Cases of physical abuse and arrests related to substance abuse have increased in our community.
The issue of teenage pregnancy is also a cause for concern. We have noted a high rise in teenage pregnancies.’
He said the committee is urging pupils to focus on studies, both at matric level and into tertiary education.
