Special vote applications now open

Those who are not able to travel to the voting stations because of physical infirmity or disability, or who will be away from their voting districts on election day, can vote by special vote.

ELIGIBLE voters unable to visit polling stations on 1 November are encouraged to apply for special votes.

To qualify for a special vote, a person must be registered as a voter, and must apply by 5pm on 4 October.

Their application for a special vote will need to be approved.

‘Everyone’s vote counts,’ said Chief Electoral Officer Sy Mamabolo.

‘If approved, this category of voters will cast their ballots at their voting station of registration on 30 or 31 October.’

Mamabolo said this is also open to people, such as police officers, nurses, doctors and members of the media, who will be on duty on election day.

Voting station special votes:
Voters may apply online at www.elections.org.za, or via SMS – send voter ID number to 32249, or in person at your local IEC office.

Home visit special votes:
Voters may apply online at www.elections.org.za or in person at your local IEC office.

Once the IEC has received and considered a special vote application, the voter will be notified by SMS about the status of their application.
