Minimal boost to some KZN dam levels after spring rains

Hluhluwe dam, which reached 100% capacity earlier this year, is now at 86.6%

Spring showers experienced across the region have given Goedertrouw dam in eShowe a slight boost, shifting from 70.6% last week to 71.0% this week.

This is according to the weekly status of dam levels issued by the Department of Water and Sanitation (DWS). Overall, provincial water storage levels are currently at 67.0%, up from last week’s 66.9%. ‘Although minimal, we really appreciate the increase.

If the unpredictable summer rains we experienced in 2020 are anything to go by, every drop in our dams really counts for something,’ said DWS spokesperson Sputnik Ratau.

Hluhluwe dam, which reached 100% capacity earlier this year, is at 86.6% this week, down from 87.0%. ‘We really would like to caution against reckless water use as temperatures will increase, which will in turn result in the evaporation of water, and will ultimately lead to a decrease of dam levels,’ said Ratau.

He said while the department monitors the status of dam levels, several projects are being implemented in various parts of the province to augment water supply.
