The facts about this type of cancer are as follows:

• Black African men are at a much higher risk of getting prostate cancer than any other race group
• Men who have a father or brother with prostate cancer are 2 to 3 times more likely to develop prostate cancer themselves
• The risk of prostate cancer begins to rise sharply after age 55 and peaks between ages 70 and 74
• The 5-year survival rate for men diagnosed with early-stage prostate cancer is 98%

The Cancer Association of South Africa (Cansa) reports with great concern that the number of men being diagnosed with late-stage cancer is on the rise.

When it comes to prostate cancer, global research indicates that approximately one in every four to six black men will be diagnosed with prostate cancer, compared to about 1 in every 8 white males in their lifetime.

In helping to bring awareness of both prostate and testicular cancer, Friday 15 October will see brave men in purple speedos take to the streets of their neighbourhoods to run cancer outta their ‘hoods.

This year, the Hollard Daredevil Run is going countrywide with a once-off Covid edition national event that will see participants running alone, with a friend or in a small group of maximum five runners.
