The programme is a joint venture between the uMhlathuze Municipality, King Cetshwayo District Municipality and the KwaZulu-Natal Department of Health in the King Cetshwayo district.

Motorists who lined up at the sports complex in Veldenvlei last Thursday praised the initiative for its convenience.

‘Initially, I was scared to get the vaccine and to even go out to the vaccination sites, but when I heard about the drive-thru, I decided to take the opportunity.

‘It did not even take that long; everything was done in an hour. I waited in the queue while sitting in my car, registered and then got my jab – everything was seamless,’ said James Blackie.

‘I really enjoyed the convenience of it,’ he added.

The first resident to get the jab at the drive-thru was 90-year-old Poonammam Peruman from Brackenham.

Peruman was driven to the vaccine site by her grandson who also expressed excitement of taking her first jab of the Pfizer vaccine.

‘I have decided to take the vaccine to prolong my days, since the vaccine is the only thing that can save us from this deadly virus,’ said Peruman.

The Covid-19 vaccine drive-thru initiative is running until 15 August, and is open between 3pm and 7pm on weekdays and from 9am to 7pm on weekends.
