KZN civic forum concerned about economic sabotage

THE South African National Civic Organisation (Sanco) has raised concerns about the recent hysterical looting and flagrant theft around KZN.

Sanco provincial secretary Sizwe Cele said they had never thought this country would experience such a chaotic situation during the democratic dispensation.

‘We believe this scandalous behaviour was perpetrated by the very people of whom the majority are our electorate.

‘We represent the dreams, aspirations and hopes of the poorest of the poor of this province and the country.

‘We understand that this sector of society consists of people who are oriented in the values of ubuntu, and not towards the monstrous greed which seized the architects of apartheid, which put us in this appalling triple challenge of poverty, unemployment and inequality.

‘These triple challenges derail what could have been a bona fide cause for the concerned people into such a criminal expedition,’ Cele said.

He said they understand this was started by those who were demanding the release of the incarcerated former president Jacob Gedleyihlekisa Zuma.

‘It is without a doubt that South Africa is a democratic country which is governed by the rule of law, which permits people to demonstrate and to picket, but peacefully.

‘While those who sympathise with former president Zuma were expected to exercise some of these rights, it was never expected that such might lead to so much looting, economic sabotage, death and racial tensions.

‘We understand that unlike the mainstream media reports which show that it is only big business that is affected, the truth is both big and small businesses are affected, irrespective of whether or not they are owned by whites, blacks or Indians.

‘Everybody lost, and the reality is that everybody is still going to suffer for a long time to come,’ he said.
