WATCH: City of uMhlathuze residents clean up after unrest

Community members banded together to clean up Sanlam Centre, Game Centre and other parts of Empangeni CBD destroyed by rioters

City of uMhlathuze residents rolled up their sleeves on Wednesday to clean up areas affected by the unrest and looting of the past few days.

Community members banded together to clean up Sanlam Centre, Game Centre and other parts of Empangeni CBD destroyed by rioters.

The show of unity was also evident in Mzingazi on Wednesday as residents removed rubble and debris that was used to block roads leading to the township.

The uMhlathuze Municipality has also kicked off its mop-up operations in all affected areas.

‘As of today, the municipality will apply a double-shift system in tackling the waste, and work day and night for two days, going back to normal schedule on Saturday.

‘The assessment shows that it is mainly the shopping centres, the CBD and malls which are mainly affected in eSikhaleni, Empangeni, eNseleni, and Richards Bay suburbs including Meerensee and others,’ said City spokesperson Mdu Ncalane.

‘Residential areas are experiencing a backlog on the normal waste removal.

‘The city has plans in place to deal with such backlogs, and urges community members to bear with the situation until it returns to normal.’

Meanwhile, members of the South African National Defence Force (SANDF) have been deployed across the Zululand region to restore calm and stability.
