Environmentally-friendly initiative bags funds for animal care

PET lovers throughout the country have the opportunity to make a difference in the lives of animals in need.

All they need to do is buy Pick n Pay’s latest in a series of new 100% recycled RPET bags designed to help raise funds in aid of the work done by NPO Project 18, which supports charities caring for lost, abandoned and neglected animals.

The environmentally-friendly bags feature adorable images of puppies and kittens and are available from select Pick n Pay stores nationwide at a cost of R30 each.

A percentage of the proceeds from the sale of the bags will go towards Project 18, helping the NPO to purchase more than 10 000kg (10 tonnes) of animal food.

Project 18 was founded by 20-year-old Bake Pittaway, a former National Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI) volunteer from Cape Town.

The NPO supports approximately 14 animal shelters and 3 500 animals, providing them with much-needed food supplies, pet care products, vaccinations and sterilisations.

Pittaway founded Project 18 two years ago, in celebration of his 18th birthday. ‘I didn’t want to celebrate the typical way in which people do when stepping into adulthood,’ he said.

‘So I decided instead to use the money gifted to me by family and friends to help support local charities.’
