Rio Tinto halts operations at RBM

Mining operations have been halted until further notice

RIO Tinto has declared a force majeure, halting mining operations at Richards Bay Minerals (RBM) until further notice.

The company, which owns RBM, said the decision was taken as a result of ongoing community unrest threatening the safety of employees, contractors and community members.

‘The safety of our people is our top priority.

‘We continue to offer our full support to the investigating authorities and I would like to acknowledge the ongoing support of the regional and national governments and South African Police Service as we work together to ensure that we can safely resume operations,’ said Rio Tinto chief executive for Minerals, Sinead Kaufman.

Kaufman said operations will only resume when the safety and security in the area improves.

This as the mine continues to face disruptions caused by violent protests characterised by road blocks and destruction of property.
