Celebrate World Bicycle Day

Paying tribute to the bicycle as it grows tourism and takes us back to nature

World Bicycle Day, which is celebrated on 3 June, has sentimental value to some, as this inspirational mode of transport has, through tourism and recreational activities, helped bring to life some rural economies.

A United Nations (UN) designated day, World Bicycle Day is observed as cycling is recognised by experts as having tremendous health benefits for all age groups.

Amid the Covid-19 pandemic and ahead of World Environment Day on Saturday, it is important to mention that cycling has once again proved that it’s the better mode of transport – affordable, environmentally-friendly and healthy.

According to the World Health Organisation (WHO), ‘safe infrastructure for walking and cycling is a pathway for achieving greater health equity’.

Commuters who use their bicycles regularly agree that cycling saves time and frustrating traffic jams.

Many cities across the world have a separate cycling lane for bikers, with some designating entire portions of the city to cycling and pedestrians only.

Why World Bicycle Day is celebrated

* Increased bicycle use means lower greenhouse gas emissions: Cycling contributes to mitigation of carbon dioxide emissions as it possesses an intrinsic zero-emission value.

* Cycling leads to a healthier life: Cycling leads to increased cardiovascular fitness, muscle strength and flexibility. It improves joint mobility and helps decrease stress levels.

* Cycling saves money: Bikes are free to ride and a stress-free mode of travel.

* Being aware of the local environment: Cycling helps awareness about the local environment and sustainable consumption and production.
