Richards Bay SPCA bookshop now open weekly

Bookworms will welcome the news that Richards Bay SPCA's newly-renovated bookshop is now open

BOOKWORMS will welcome the news that Richards Bay SPCA’s newly-renovated bookshop is now open Mondays to Saturdays.

The well-stocked shop at the SPCA premises in Meerensee sells books of all genres, catering to the interests of all book lovers and reading enthusiasts. In addition to satisfying literary needs, the bookshop will bring in much-needed funds to the cash-strapped organisation.

Declining donations and sponsorship in a tough economy, coupled with a heightened need for animal services within the community, has put extra strain on the SPCA.

Although animal sterilisations and healthcare don’t form part of the SPCA’s mandate, cash-stricken pet owners are approaching the SPCA as they cannot afford veterinary services. With animal welfare a priority, the increased veterinary costs are becoming a financial strain on the Richards Bay SPCA – so much so that, as the end of the month draws near, there is not enough to pay salaries for the month.

Without Richards Bay SPCA, the service requirements would fall on to the already-struggling Empangeni SPCA, which already has a large service area of its own.

The situation is further compounded by the fact that there is no SPCA or animal pound north of Richards Bay, so all animal welfare cases from places as far afield as Manguzi and Sodwana Bay fall onto the shoulders of the Bay SPCA.

Alongside veterinary costs, the SPCA expenses include petrol, vehicle wear-and-tear, office running costs, staff salaries and food for animals.

Residents are urged to support the vital work performed by the SPCA by visiting the new bookshop, the SPCA charity shops or providing cash deposits.

Cash donations can be made straight into the SPCA’s bank account:
