6 old-school tips to save money

Sometimes the best ways to save money are the old ways

When it comes to saving money, sometimes the old ways work best as many of the ways in which our grandparents and parents saved money are still highly effective when it comes to making your cash go further today.

Regardless of the household in which you grew up, it’s never too late to instill some good old-fashioned money habits that offer you greater piece of mind in the long run.

1. Home is best: Throughout the pandemic we have learned that it is possible to have fun in the comfort of your own home. Read a book, work in the garden, clean or de-clutter your home, plan a movie night with your kids or a date night with your partner.

2. Mend and make do: Rather repair than replace – like changing your car’s oil and air filters – can save you big bills in the long run. When clothing needs mending, or an appliance is broken, fix it rather than buying a new item.

3. Plan your meals: By doing this, you won’t only save money, but also time. If you plan ahead, you won’t end up wondering what to cook. This can also ward off the temptation of eating out or ordering takeaways.

4. Save money when eating out: Plan to eat out ahead of time as you are able to check for special restaurant offers in advance, such as two-for-one deals.

5. Don’t buy it if you can’t afford it: Back in the day debt was a dirty word, and people would instead save up until they could afford to pay cash. This should still be a value.

6. Make heartfelt gifts: People often prefer being blessed with handmade gifts as opposed to store-bought items. Search the internet for recipes to make artisan biscuits, homemade jams and even beauty products.

Our parents and grandparents were taught to count their blessings and be grateful for what they had. This is a good value to hold on to for both your mood and your pocket.

Don’t be ruled by advertisers and influencers, as you are not what you own.
