Keeping a safe distance from the car in front of you is arguably the most import rule to follow in order to stay safe and alive on the road.
A decent following distance allows the driver to react timeously and appropriately in case of emergency, like when someone up ahead decides to perform a dangerous manoeuvre with bad consequences.
Different conditions ask for different following distances; for instance when it’s raining you should stay further away from the car in front.
The same goes for night-time driving. Ask yourself whether you have enough space to react if something happens, and if not, adjust your following distance accordingly.
Yes, you’ll have the occasional reckless driver pushing in front of you, but stay cool and let them be, and open up space between yourself and the car ahead again.
After all, it’s better to arrive a few minutes later at your destination than not at all.
