BLOOD stocks are critically low countrywide, with the national blood service having reported only 3.3 days’ supply on hand ahead of the Easter long weekend last week.
The South African National Blood Service (SANBS) is calling on all new and existing donors to visit their nearest blood centre to donate and boost stocks to the required five-day supply.

One blood donation can save up to three lives.
SANBS has also launched the #NoStereotypes campaign to highlight the role everyone can play in saving lives, no matter their status, culture or race.
Through #NoStereotypes, SANBS hopes to initiate conversations about discrimination based on stereotypes and boost blood stocks.
The campaign will gain momentum through a thought-provoking film which highlights some South African stereotypes using real-life experiences.
The #NoStereotypes film is set to launch on digital platforms soon.
‘The harmonious strand of a society is rooted in embracing differences while acknowledging the value in diversity, with many striving for unity through a bigger cause – like saving lives through blood donation,’ said SANBS CEO Ravi Reddy.
‘Through this campaign, we recognise the millions of people who donate blood voluntarily to save lives. ‘We are urging acknowledgement of everyone’s contribution in saving lives and encourage people to be a part of the movement.’
