Zululand art fraternity mourns death of Menzi Ngubane

The legendary actor was known for his many roles such as Cijimbi in the 80’s drama, Kwakhala Nyonini, as well as his role, Mazwi in the 90’s drama series, Ubambo Lwami.

CONDOLENCES are still pouring in for veteran actor, Menzi Ngubane, who died on Saturday.

The legendary actor was known for his many roles such as Cijimbi in the 80’s drama, Kwakhala Nyonini, as well as his role, Mazwi in the 90’s drama series, Ubambo Lwami.

He was also played a teacher in a controversial drama, Yizo Yizo in the late 90s, with his more recent roles in productions such as Gold DiggersHeistFamily Secrets, and Ashes to Ashes as well as in a South African film, How to Steal 2 Million.

He made an impact in the industry when he took the role of media tycoon, Sbusiso Dlomo, in SABC 1’s popular soapie, Generations; as well as his performance of the Ngwenya patriarch in Mzansi Magic telenovela, Isibaya – opposite award-winning Zululand actress, Celeste Ntuli. Ngubane’s death has been felt by Zululand actors who have shared platforms with him.

Ngwelezana-born actor, Durban Gen Mthandeni Mbambo, who played alongside Ngubane in Isibaya, described him as ‘a legend who will be remembered for generations.’

Award-winning comedian and actor, Sifiso Nene – also from Ngwelezana – echoed the sentiment, saying: ‘His consistency and the respect for his art were on another level. From back in the day when we were kids, his acting grew and diversified right in front of us. He stayed true to his passion, even when he got sick, he still kept on going.’

SATMA award-winning poet, Mbali ‘Magcwabe Imbongi’ Mkhize-Mabaso, told the ZO that Ngubane would always be remembered for fighting for South African artists.
