Tronox invests R9-million towards developing communities

One of our core values is to honour our responsibility to create value for stakeholders and provide long-term sustainable solutions for the under-served members of our communities. As a global organisation, we are committed to creating sustainability and making a positive difference to the lives of people from the communities where we operate. Through our Local Economic Development (LED) projects, identified in our Social Labour Plan, we invested over R9-million in 2020.

BUILDING HOUSES FOR THE COMMUNITY

Umlalazi mayoral houses

3 houses were built for identified families in need in the Umlalazi area. Contract value was R700 000 and the onsite contractor is Mr B Hlongwane of Bongamagugu Construction. This project has employed 12 males, of whom 9 are youths.

Dube Housing Project
Beneficiaries in the Dube community were blessed with new homes and a renewed sense of pride and dignity

A critical housing shortage exists in many parts of the country and a dire local need was identified in the Dube area under Inkosi Dube. Ten houses were constructed in 2019 as Phase 1 of the project to help address that need. The contract value is R1.3-million.

 

A further ten houses were completed in 2020 as Phase 2 of the Dube housing project in the Madlankala area under Inkosi Dube. With a contract value of close to R2-million, the appointed and on-site contractor was Nomuntu Construction & Projects, a 100% black women-owned company, which employs 5 females and 15 males – all youths.

EMPOWERING COMMUNITIES THROUGH EDUCATION

Inkosi Zenzo Primary School – Admin block & 3 classrooms

Educational needs are never ending and the problems associated with lack of buildings and resources are numerous, affecting both educators and learners. This project was identified in Mevamhlophe Reserve, Empangeni for the construction of an Admin block and classrooms for Inkosi Zenzo Primary School, to a contract value of almost R1 500 000. The appointed and on-site contractor is Rosette Corporation, a 100% black women-owned construction business giving employment opportunities to 12 people, of whom seven are youths and two are females.

Ensingweni Primary School – Admin block

Without proper administration offices, no school can operate efficiently. This project was identified in Ensingweni area under Inkosi Nzuza, for the construction of an Administration block for Ensingweni Primary School. The appointed and on-site contractor is Mr ES Mthethwa of Ngangenkukhu Trading. This project, with a contract value of close to R940 000 has employed nine people, including one female and four youths.

Ablutions

The lack of proper toilet facilities has immense repercussions, not the least of which are health and hygiene dangers; this in addition to the undignified impact on learners. This project, valued at close to R780 000 was identified in Ensingweni area under Inkosi Nzuza, for the construction of an Ablution facility for Ensingweni Primary School. The appointed and on-site contractor is Mr LD Mthembu of LD Lindani Development and has employed six males, four of them being youths.

 

Gubhethuka Primary School – Admin block

The Administration block at Gubhethuka Primary School is ‘good to go’, having been 100% completed at the end of December 2020. This project was identified in Dube area at Esikhaleni under Inkosi Dube, with the appointed and on-site contractor for the close to R950 000 project being Mr N Zwane of Alson Group. They employed six workers, of whom five were youths and one a female.

The importance of youth keeping pace with modern technology cannot be over-emphasised and the need for a Computer Laboratory was identified in KwaDlangezwa under Inkosi Mkhwanazi. Getkate Projects Pty (Ltd), a 100% black woman-owned business was allocated the approximate R830 000 tender and on-site contractor Ms Lungile Getkate employed 13 people which includes four youths and one female.

Through the projects identified for completion in 2020, we have in total created 78 jobs and business opportunities: with a key focus on black youth and black women. Furthermore, we have supported the Department of Education by empowering schools with equipment and infrastructure and providing both teachers and learners with tools to succeed and reshape their future.
