Covid TERS extension welcomed

Covid-19 TERS has been extended until 15 March 2021 for sectors still affected by lockdown

Employees with co-morbidities, and people over 60 who cannot be reasonably accommodated at work, can access the Covid-19 Temporary Employer/Employee Relief Scheme (TERS).

This was among the accepted proposals made by the Unemployment Insurance Fund (UIF) at a meeting of the National Economic Development and Labour Council (Nedlac) last week.

Other accepted proposals include an income replacement claim for employees who have had to self-isolate or quarantine.

The meeting follows President Cyril Ramaphosa’s announcement that the Covid-19 TERS will be extended until 15 March 2021 for sectors still affected by lockdown.

This includes tourism, hospitality as well as the manufacturing, sale, dispensing, distribution and transportation of liquor.

Two payment schedules have been agreed upon for the extension; the first being 16 October to 31 December 2020, and the second from 1 January to 15 March 2021.

‘The business constituency has been tasked to review the proposed sectors to ensure that all affected establishments are covered in the extension,’ said Marsha Bronkhorst, Acting UIF Commissioner.

‘We aim to open the system for the processing of applications for the first period (16 October to 31 December 2020) by the first week of March 2021.’

The UIF will announce when the system is open for applications and provide guides and frequently asked questions to assist applicants.
