Heavy rains and strong winds for northern KZN

COGTA MEC Sipho Hlomuka orders high alert for KZN disaster teams

RESIDENTS in northern KZN are warned to be on high alert this weekend as there is a risk of more flooding brought on by another tropical storm.

This warning comes from KZN MEC for Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs (Cogta), Sipho Hlomuka, as disaster management teams continue to deal with the aftermath of tropical cyclone Eloise, in the uThukela district.

The low pressure system is expected to develop into a tropical depression this weekend, bringing with it heavy rainfall for the extreme parts of Mozambique, and northern KZN.

Rainfall is expected to begin today (Friday) and continue over the weekend.

According to Storm Report SA, rainfall is expected to increase drastically on Sunday over most of KZN, with flooding a ‘definite possibility’.

Strong wind gusts are expected along the KZN coastline from Sunday, with rough seas also forecast from Saturday.

In recent weeks, persistent heavy rains have flooded roads in both Ladysmith and Winterton, where engineers are working to resolve challenges posed by the water build-up.

Displaced Ladysmith residents are currently being housed at an indoor sports complex, with community halls opened in affected areas.

To date, KZN has lost eight lives as a result of the inclement weather conditions that began on 24 January.

The fatalities include a three-year-old child who was swept away when her mother was crossing a river in Ulundi.
