Engineering degrees now offered at Unizulu

Watershed moment as Unizulu gets accreditation to offer engineering qualifications

The University of Zululand has been accredited by the Council of Higher Education (CHE) and registered with the South African Qualifications Authority (SAQA) to offer the following four-year engineering degrees from 2021:

  • Bachelor of Engineering in Electrical Engineering
  • Bachelor of Engineering in Mechanical Engineering

The institution received a Letter of Endorsement from the Engineering Council of South Africa (ECSA) and they will be accredited by ECSA as part of the Washington Accord international accreditation process.

The university is responding to the vast needs of a technological world that require well-skilled and trained engineers to bring ideas into reality. Applying the principles of mathematics and science, engineers are able to develop solutions to the world’s biggest technical issues.

Being the only comprehensive institution situated in Northern KwaZulu-Natal and the industrial hub of Richards Bay in the City of Umhlathuze, the University of Zululand is primed to offer solutions in a world that is evolving towards the 4th Industrial Revolution.  The institution understands that engineers are the ones behind major developments. The majority of today’s services and products have some element of engineering involved.

As part of efforts to strategically position the Richards Bay campus and its Engineering programmes, an ECSA symposium and engagements with the Richards Bay Industrial Development Zone were held during the year under review. Both these engagements have paved the way for richer collaboration between Unizulu and the RBIDZ and ECSA. The Provincial Department of Economic Development has expressed willingness to allocate space for the development of engineering facilities next to the RBIDZ Techno Park with the view of making Unizulu’s Engineering programmes an integral part of its growth plans as it will be providing competitive knowledge to industry, education, and society.
