Huge police presence in eMadlankala after violent protest on Monday morning

POLICE are monitoring the situation in eMadlankala area outside eSikhaleni, after a violent community protest over ongoing water outages broke out this morning.

For about a week, residents have been left without water and, to get answers, they took their grievances against the City of uMhlathuze to the streets.

From as early as 5am, furious residents were burning tyres and blocking all the roads around eSikhaleni.

Police were immediately called to the scene to control the large crowd, but at their arrival the situation intensified, with residents stoning and throwing glass bottles at the police cars.

To restore order, police had to use rubber bullets and tear gas to disperse the aggravated crowd.

No injuries have been reported and police are monitoring the area.
