Deadline extended for new engineering courses at University of Zululand

Prospective mechanical and electrical engineering students have until 19 February to apply

ZULULANDERS wanting to study electrical and mechanical engineering at the University of Zululand (Unizulu) this year, still have until 19 February to submit applications.

This follows the university’s decision to extend the application process for the newly-launched programmes at the Richards Bay campus.

Prospective students require a National Senior Certificate (NSC) qualification with maths and physics at level 5, and English at level 4, to be considered.

Speaking at the official launch in December, Higher Education Minister, Dr Blade Nzimande described the introduction of the faculty as a ‘milestone for the university, province, the Zululand region and historically disadvantaged institutions’.

‘I am reliably informed that this is the first in 40 years that an engineering programme is being introduced at a South African university. It is definitely the first engineering programme at the University of Zululand, 60 years after its founding,’ said Dr Nzimande.

He said Unizulu’s decision to offer these qualifications in the central business district is a strategic move owing to its close proximity to the Port of Richards Bay.

‘It will not only strengthen the large-scale industrial strengths of the uMhlathuze area and the Richards Bay Industrial Development Zone (IDZ), but it will also boost the economic outlook of the entire province of KZN.’

He announced that the department has allocated R90-million for the development of the new engineering building during the current infrastructure funding cycle.

‘We have also provided the university with support to build capacity to procure, develop and manage such buildings and all university infrastructure effectively and efficiently,’ he said.
