Promote the importance of sharing stories this World Read Aloud Day

Pick a book, find a friend and read aloud

THIS year, World Read Aloud Day (3 February) will be celebrated differently.

It will be without large group activities or events and, instead, citizens are urged to take a book, find a friend and read aloud in the safety of their homes.

READ Educational Trust, a non-profit organisation that operates broadly in the education and literacy sectors across South Africa, has invited the public to participate in World Read Aloud Day by reading to younger children.

Aimed at highlighting the importance of reading aloud and sharing stories, especially for younger children, the activity is now even more vital to promote literacy amid the Covid-19 pandemic.

In a world where Covid-19 has wreaked havoc on life as we knew it, the Early Childhood Development (ECD) sector was hit hard as after months of lockdown, very few pre-schools, playgroups and creches reopened.

Reading aloud to young children goes a long way in boosting children’s confidence and helps them cope better with anxiety.

It expands their worlds and supports healthy brain development – a priceless foundation for success at school and beyond.
