iSimangaliso Wetland Park beaches remain open under adjusted Level 3

While the wetland park remains open, there are certain regulations in place

THERE has been some confusion over the closure of KZN’s beaches under adjusted Level 3 lockdown regulations announced last week.

While beaches in Covid-19 hot spot areas are closed, as the iSimangaliso Wetland Park falls under uMkhanyakude District which is not a hot spot area, its beaches remain open.

As confirmed by the wetland park authority, the entire park remains open under adjusted Level 3, but with the following restrictions in place:

  1. Monitoring for compliance with all health protocols and social distancing measures will be strictly implemented
  2. Due to safety considerations, beaches will be open between 8am and 6pm
  3. Hosting of events and gatherings is not permitted
  4. Fishermen in possession of a permit or exemption granted in terms of the Marine Living Resources Act, 1998 will be allowed access to beaches between 6am and 6pm
  5. iSimangaliso will strictly enforce limits on the number of people, as guided by the regulations and park carrying capacity across its facilities
  6. Concessionaires within the park as well as overnight guests will be allowed to operate within the constraints of the regulations
  7. No alcohol is allowed in the park, and control points are in place
  8. Roadblocks are established at various points across the park to enforce compliance

In an effort to remain Covid-19 compliant and help rural communities surrounding the park to be safe, iSimangaliso has partnered with various organisations in distributing personal protective equipment (PPE) and food parcels, and conducting awareness-raising within the communities.
