City firefighter and saxophonist dies

THE City of uMhlathuze mourns the passing of one of the long service Firefighter and a saxophonist of note Mr Anton Mbhasobheni Mhlongo (58).

Mhlongo’s saxophone sounds that echoed in many parts of the City has been silenced by death.

Mhlongo passed away on Sunday after a short illness.

Lucky were those who drove passed by and visited the Boardwalk Mall on Christmas Day where Mhlongo was singing Christmas carols and little did he know that it was his last basking gig.

Mhlongo was known to many residents lately as a basking Saxophonists mainly in shopping centres around Richards Bay and Empangeni. He also visited some major events and mesmerise people with his serenading sounds.

Mhlongo also served the City for years as a Fire Fighter after being employed in the parks section.

He was recruited in 2001 as a General Worker and in 2005 he was admitted as a Traineee Fire Fighter.

“We are shocked and saddened by the passing of Mr Mhlongo especially because he was healthy and jovial on the Christmas Day and even did what he was famous of at the mall.

He has served the people of uMhlathuze and the nation well and created good memories for his family, colleagues and the people he played for.

We wish the family and his colleagues all the strength during these difficult times,” said City Municipal Manager Lulamile Mapholoba.

Due to Covid-19 health regulations, Mhlongo’s funeral service will be streamed live on the City of uMhlathuze Facebook pagr from 8 am -10 am on 31 December 2020.
