TLU warns farmers against bogus inspectors

The TLU reminds farmers that all employee records are confidential and any unauthorised persons wanting to see such records must be in possession of a court order

The oldest agricultural organisation in South Africa, the TLU, has warned farmers across the country to be vigilant against labour unrest.

According to the TLU, the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) has been sending its own ‘labour inspectors’ to farms to gain access to farm workers.

In all such cases known to TLU, these so-called EFF labour inspectors mislead workers regarding labour laws, thus causing friction between employees and employer which did not exists in the first place.

The TLU advises farmers to not allow any EFF ‘labour inspectors’ on their properties, but to rather contact the Department of Labour or CCMA should there be a real labour issue.

The organisation suggests farmers do the following to protect themselves and their workers against political meddling:
* Secure entry gates to farms and put up signs stating it’s private property and trespassers will be prosecuted. Such sign should be in multiple languages.
* Be part of a local farm watch group
* Always have a good relationship with the local police
* Have the contact details of a professional with legal knowledge of public gatherings

The TLU reminds farmers that all employee records are confidential and any unauthorised persons wanting to see such records must be in possession of a court order.
