Animal welfare assistant students gave of their time during the vaccination campaign, as did SAPS for ensuring the safety of all participating, while the Department of Health raised much awareness in the run-up to the campaign, and during it.

This while the weekly rabies report covering the week commencing 28 November revealed that six dogs in KZN had tested positive for the disease.

One dog from eNseleni tested positive, with one in uMvoti also testing positive, while the rest were from eThekwini Metro and the Ugu district.

What to do in the event of a bite OR SCRATCH from any animal that could have rabies:

* Wash any scratches or wounds with running water and soap for 10 minutes
* Get to a doctor or hospital for a course of four vaccinations. Do not let a clinic turn you away – insist on speaking to someone who can advise you about vaccination. If the clinic does not have a vaccine, ask them to find out for you the nearest one that does. If you have a bite you will also need injections of rabies immunoglobulin (RIG) into the wound.
