WITH the festive season approaching and many people heading off on holiday, criminals are sussing out ‘easy-target’ houses.
To avoid falling victim, it’s important to remember these basic security measures.

– Ensure the alarm system is working
– Inform your security company of any holiday plans, and the best way to get in touch with you if there’s an emergency
– Ask a neighbour or friend to do regular checks on your home while you’re away, and putting lights on at night
– Cut back bushes or trees that may offer easy access over walls, or ones that provide good hiding places for criminals
– If someone is going to stay in your house while you’re away, ensure they know how to use your alarm
– Double-check that you have locked all windows and doors before leaving home, and make sure you have good burglar bars on windows and security gates on doors
– Turn off your geyser and unnecessary electrical appliances so you can save on electricity costs
– Try to be discreet about your plans and packing
– Make sure everyone in the family knows what to do in a case of an emergency
