According to the iSimangaliso Wetland Park under whose authority the St Lucia beaches fall, the man, aged between 19 and 21 years old, was swimming with friends when he disappeared in the sea.

NSRI Station 40, based in St Lucia, was called to the scene to search for the victim, but was unable to recover the body.

The search resumed early this morning, and is ongoing.

This is the fourth drowning incident reported within the bounds of the iSimangaliso Wetland Park since June and the authority has warned beach-goers to be vigilant in the upcoming festive season, especially during adverse weather conditions, which includes rough seas.

The drowning was reported to Mtubatuba SAPS and an inquest docket has been opened.
