Golela border gates re-opened

Motorists can now use the Golela border gate on route to Swaziland

GOLELA border gate, which was closed on Thursday because of a lack of water, was re-opened on Friday once water had been restored.

Motorists looking to pass through the Swaziland border post were forced to use alternative routes, with only SAPS on-site performing visible patrols.

One source, who asked to remain anonymous, said that, in addition to the water challenge, the border gate was in an unhygienic state.

‘The place was very dirty as there were no cleaners,’ he told the ZO. ‘The cleaning company’s contract was not renewed, so working there has been a huge challenge. Custom and immigration officials subsequently went home owing to the water interruption.’

Another source said it was the responsibility of the Department of Public Works to renew the cleaning contract with the service provider.

Spokesperson for the KZN Department of Public Works, Kiru Naidoo, referred all questions to the national branch, however, attempts to obtain comment from the national department were unsuccessful.
