Unemployed youth clean streets of Ngwelezana

This will be an ongoing campaign, with the aim of finding a long-lasting solution for waste management

A GROUP of unemployed youth in Ngwelezana, supported by the City of uMhlathuze, is tackling the mess of illegal dumping through a dedicated clean-up campaign, with the latest initiative held in Jabulani section of Ward 27 last week.

Group leader, Mpendulo Mbulawa, said they were disturbed by how dirty the township streets were.

‘We started this campaign last August by cleaning passages, such as the one at Nyamazane Crescent, before moving to B-Section, next to Thembelihle Primary School.

‘We want to create awareness about littering and illegal dumping in the township, and we are committed to rectifying the waste management crisis engulfing our townships, particularly Ngwelezana. We’re fortunate to be joined by the City of uMhlathuze’s Waste Management Unit, who provided us with plastic bags and gloves.’

He said the team hopes to attract tourists to the region, thereby boosting the local economy.

‘This is not just about cleaning the township, it’s also an initiative to stimulate local economic development. No investors will want to come to a dirty township.

‘We also intend to solve many societal problems, including crime.’

According to Mbulawa, this will be an ongoing campaign, held every Thursday in different parts of Ngwelezana, with the drive to find a long-lasting solution for waste management.
