2.3m African python meets its match in Richards Bay

The snake was caught and released in a safe location

MEERENSEE resident Heinrich Coetzee began last Friday morning having to deal with a 2.3m African python that made its way into his chicken coop.

Luckily for Coetzee, being a qualified snake catcher for 12 years, he knew exactly what to do.

Also an Ezemvelo KZN Wildlife honorary officer in Hluhluwe, he grabbed his equipment and successfully bagged the snake.

‘I took it to a safe haven where I released it,’ said Coetzee.

‘This species can reach 5m in length and generally feeds on rodents, chickens, small cats and dogs.

‘You will definitely encounter more snakes now as they hunt and mate during the summer period.’

Locals can contact Coetzee anytime if they have a snake issue, on 072 6356911.
