Investment boost for tourism

As the holiday season approaches, Dube-Ncube encouraged local and international tourists to explore the rural parts of KZN.

The KZN Department of Economic Development, Tourism and Environmental Affairs (EDTEA), says it is investing in infrastructure to boost tourism in the Zululand district.

During a visit to tourist locations in the district last week, MEC Nomusa Dube-Ncube said they are partnering with the uPhongolo Municipality and other stakeholders to create a memorable experience for tourists.

Her trip to the northern part of the province began with a visit to Intonga Farm which produces sugar cane. Next was a visit to a community project, Koopialien Guest House, where renovations of R1.5-million were funded by the department.

‘uPhongolo Municipality is the implementing agent for all the refurbishment at this tourism facility owned by the community through the Mahlalela Community Trust,’ Dube-Ncube said.

‘Our crown jewel, the Mkuze Falls Game Reserve, has also been renovated and upgraded by the department to the tune of R2.5-million.’

As the holiday season approaches, Dube-Ncube encouraged local and international tourists to explore the rural parts of KZN.

‘As we resuscitate our economy in line with the economic reconstruction and transformation plan, we do not want local communities to be left behind,’ she said.

In September, Dube-Ncube visited the Hluhluwe-iMfolozi Park (HiP) ahead of the opening of international borders on 1 October.

She called on potential investors to partner with local communities to establish more eco-tourism products and conservation services.

‘As the department we must ensure access to economic opportunities for every citizen of this province. ‘Our wildlife and eco-tourism in general is what attracts tourists to this province,’ she said.
