THE South African National Blood Service (SANBS) is experiencing a shortage of blood, with current blood stocks at less than three-and-a-half days, while platelet stock is at less than half a day’s supply.
These low blood stocks will place the lives of 3 174 people at immediate risk this week.

At only 46% capacity, AB- is in the least supply, with B- the next lowest, at 60%.
The Richards Bay SANBS branch is urging all donors and potential donors to make their donation, which can be done during the following times:
- Monday – Friday, 9am – 4.30pm
- Saturday – 8.30am – 1.30pm
Strict Covid-19 protocols are adhered to and the SANBS is offering each blood donor a token of appreciation.
Why should I donate blood?
One unit of blood can save the lives of three people as the blood is separated into red blood cells, plasma and platelets.
Without blood donations, the SANBS cannot help those who may need blood transfusions, which occurs for a variety of reasons.
Who needs blood?
- Women haemorrhaging owing to pregnancy and other gynaecological complications
- Premature babies
- Children with severe anaemia
- Accident trauma patients
- Surgical and cancer patients
