The fight is on against gender-based violence

LifeLine Zululand hosted a GBV awareness campaign in Hluhluwe last week

THE Hluhluwe Community Policing Forum (CPF) has appealed to residents to unite and work together in the fight against crime.

The plea was made by CPF Chairperson, Nkosinathi Ngwenya, at the gender-based violence (GBV) awareness campaign last Wednesday.

The event was hosted by LifeLine Zululand and was attended by a wide selection of key stakeholders.

The main aim of the campaign was to educate the community about the danger of GBV and other social ills such as drug abuse.

Ngwenya encouraged the community to participate in the fight against crime. He said every citizen had a role to play in the safety of the community.

‘We were elected to serve the community. It is therefore important for us to work together to combat crime. We are not police spies as some may believe, but we are working with the police to ensure that everybody is safe. We are working according to the law,’ he said.

Ngwenya added they would soon embark on a programme to visit all tribal authorities in the Hluhluwe policing area, to encourage residents to participate and educate them about the importance of the CPF and what is expected of CPF members.

LifeLine project
co-ordinator, Nompilo Maphumulo, said, ‘We encourage members of the community to come forward for counselling, psychosocial support and to report criminal cases.

‘We encourage men to come forward and report abuse perpetrated against them, because we understand that not only women and children are victims.

‘We want our community to be informed about the importance of attending counselling sessions for their emotional well-being as individuals how to deal with unresolved issues, miscommunication, anger, trauma and post-trauma which may be contributing towards violence,’ Maphumulo said.

The community was also briefed about services rendered by LifeLine Zululand and how to access these services at their police stations.
