Car park vandals cause costly damage

The matter has been reported at the Richards Bay police

Not satisfied with merely stealing parts off cars, vandals in a Richards Bay CBD parking lot are also scratching vehicles of nearby office workers.

‘Shortly before lunch time on Thursday, I saw that somebody had deliberately scraped deep gouges into the paintwork of my double cab,’ said one victim, Lyn Govender.

Lyn works in the Partridge Place building across the road from the Boardwalk parking area – at the corner of Tasselberry and East Central Arterial -where no car guards operate.

‘My colleague had her car’s front and rear doors scratched on Monday and Wednesday,’ she continued.

Both the front and rear doors of this Honda were badly gouged last week

‘We understand that a number of other vehicles have suffered the same fate and that wheel trims and hubcaps have been stolen, all in broad daylight.’

While the matter has been reported at the Richards Bay police, Lyn is mystified as to a motive or a possible suspect.

‘It may be random vandalism, but the extent to which the vehicles were scratched seems to indicate a planned event with a destructive instrument.’

The victims believe the incidents are directly or indirectly connected to the public drinking parties that resumed in the car park as soon as lockdown eased – as evidenced by broken bottles that litter the scene.

Even more unsettling is the fact that one female business owner says she has been followed out of the parking lot, several times, after work while driving her new Golf7.
