KZN Premier Sihle Zikalala has assured uMkhanyakude district residents that they will soon receive clean running water.

Zikalala visited the almost completed KwaShemula water scheme in Jozini last Wednesday. He was accompanied by district Mayor, Solomon Mkhombo, and Mhlathuze Water officials.

The R29-million water scheme is designed to supply water to Jozini, uMhlabuyalingana, Big 5 Hlabisa and Mtubatuba municipalities.

Zikalala said the thousands of households in these municipalities will receive clean water from communal standpipes next week.

‘The community will be supplied with water through a 1- megalitre tank, which will be fed from the KwaSikhemelele water treatment plant.

‘The project was funded by the KZN Department of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs and implemented by Mhlathuze Water.

‘The project will begin by providing water to a few wards in Manguzi and will be gradually rolled out to cover the entire Manguzi area,’ Zikalala said.

He also launched the District Development Model (DDM) in the area aimed at accelerating service delivery in all district municipalities and eight metropolitan councils around the country.

‘It is symbolic that as we launch the DDM, it coincides with this inspection of the water infrastructure, which will no doubt alleviate the lack of access to water for the long suffering communities of uMkhanyakude.

‘This is a major coup for the community as water is also a catalyst to socio-economic development.’
