Roaming cattle in Richards Bay suburbs remains a problem

The issue of cattle in suburbs and along the John Ross in peak traffic times has been raised by community members

CATTLE roaming in Richards Bay residential areas remains an ongoing problem, despite the uMhlathuze Municipality having made inroads into clamping down and impounding cattle last year.

The issue of cattle in suburbs and along the John Ross in peak traffic times has been raised by community members, claiming it poses a safety risk to especially motorists.

Ward 2 councillor Christo Botha said at times there are no herdsmen present.

‘On one day an entire herd crossed Anglers Rod at the Meerensee Mall intersection while traffic was heavy. This remains a safety issue,’ said Botha.

In Brackenham, chairperson of Brackenham Community Civic Watch, Ray Govender, said they are experiencing the same problem with cattle venturing into properties and damaging plants.

‘While cattle is a major problem, we also have complaints of residents running poultry businesses at their homes and breeding more than 100 chickens at a time in their garages.

‘This is not acceptable in a residential area and community members do not have to deal with the stink of cattle and chicken waste,’ said Govender.

City of uMhlathuze spokesperson, Mdu Ncalane, said community members can call the 24-hour traffic and by-law enforcement line (035 9075760) to lodge complaints.
