‘When the tellers refused, the suspects fired two shots at the glass door and then kicked it until it broke. They took the money in the tellers’ possession and forced one to open the safe, from which more money was taken,’ Mdletshe said.

Community members, including the CPF and Isikhebe security officials, gave chase.

‘During the chase, a shoot-out ensued between the suspects and CPF members.

‘One CPF member was shot in the thigh, but two suspects were arrested – one also with a gunshot wound in the thigh, while the other was shot in the ankle.

‘The other two suspects managed to escape with the cash,’ said Mdletshe.

‘During the arrest, police recovered an unlicenced firearm and ammunition, a toy gun and one bag loaded with money.

‘The two arrested suspects appeared in the Ubombo Magistrate’s Court for business robbery, attempted murder and possession of an unlicenced firearm and ammunition.

‘They were remanded in police custody pending further investigation. They are expected to appear in court again next Wednesday for a formal bail application,’ Mdletshe said.
