New Pongola mayor to tackle corruption and inequality

Mhlongo replaces former mayor, Winnie Nhlabathi, who was recalled by the ANC's Provincial Executive Council in August

Pongola’s newly-elected mayor, Sibusiso Mhlongo, has prioritised service delivery under his administration, in an effort to enhance the lives of the area’s residents.

Mhlongo replaces former mayor, Winnie Nhlabathi, who was recalled by the ANC’s Provincial Executive Council in August.

As reported in the ZO, Nhlabathi was believed to be failing on service delivery and, alongside two bodyguards, is facing charges of assault against a citizen relating back to February this year.

Tackling social challenges

Speaking at his inauguration on Wednesday, Mhlongo told councillors and community members that he intended to lead a corruption-free municipality, with his term of office a progressive and accountable one. ‘I want our municipality to deliver on what has been identified as critical to our Integrated Development Plan (IDP),’ said mayor.

‘The organisation, to which I am affiliated (ANC), has given us a clear directive to deal with challenges of poverty, unemployment and inequality, and to change lives of the people for the better.’

In attendance were ANC Mzala Nxumalo regional secretary, Zakes Buthelezi; uMkhanyakude regional secretary, Sphile Mdaka; and Musa Dladla regional secretary, Tholi Gwala.

He said the council consists of ANC members, as well as IFP, DA, EFF and an independent councillor.

‘I am grateful that the ANC trusted me to translate its policies into a council programme,’ he continued.

‘I pledge to respect, engage and challenge our peers of other parties to hold us to accountable during my tenure in my office.’
