Empangeni SPCA needs urgent support

If things do not drastically change in the next two months, retrenchment along with other operational issues will become a reality

EMPANGENI SPCA is battling to survive after a combination of events has crippled its financial situation.

The impact of the Covid-19 pandemic and the uMhlathuze Municipality’s grant not being paid are the main reasons.

During the hard lockdown, the SPCA shop, a key income earner, was forced to close its doors.

‘At the beginning of the hard lockdown, we had enough food supply for six weeks and managed to survive thanks to financial, food and blanket donations by the local community,’ said Empangeni SPCA Inspector Debbie Cross.

‘Once restrictions were eased to Level 3, we reopened the shop’s doors, but sales have been down which has affected us negatively.

‘With the municipal grant still not reflecting in our account, we have started to dig into our savings account to get by and are taking it month by month.

‘But if things do not drastically change in the next two months or that grant does not come in soon, retrenchment along with other operational issues will definitely become a reality. Operational costs and staff salaries are huge.’

Cross urged the community to once again answer the call for help and that the municipality acknowledge the SPCA’s worth and pay the grant.
