‘Although this is a marginal decline, this trend is concerning because the spring season is in full swing.

‘Temperatures will begin to soar and given the continued effects of climate change, we expect matters to worsen before they get better,’ said Department of Water and Sanitation spokesperson, Sputnik Ratau.

The Pongolapoort Dam level is also dropping, shifting from 41, 3% to 41, 1% last week. Last year at the same time the level was 43, 4%.

Goedertrouw Dam, the main water source for the greater Richards Bay area, declined to 52, 2%. This time last year, the dam was at 52,4%.

‘We acknowledge that many parts of the province are still without water. We are working very closely with local government and water boards to implement long-term measures to address water scarcity issues,’ he said.

This follows a recent call by Water and Sanitation Minister, Lindiwe Sisulu, to chairpersons of all water boards across the country to commit themselves to fighting corruption.
