Possibility of load-shedding on Thursday increases

A conveyer belt that feeds coal to the generation units at Medupi has snapped

ESKOM earlier this (Thursday) morning announced that the possibility of load-shedding later today had increased after a conveyer belt that feeds coal to the Medupi generation units snapped.

This means the four generation units in service are unable to take in the requisite amount of coal to generate electricity.

This places further strain on the embattled power utility’s ability to provide electricity to the country over the next 24 hours.

‘While Eskom teams are working around the clock to repair the conveyer belt, which is expected to take the better part of the day, any further breakdowns elsewhere in the fleet would necessitate the implementation of stage 2 load-shedding at short notice,’ said Eskom in a statement.
